Metagenomic Surveillance Reveals Stable Mosquito Viromes During Chikungunya Transmission in Aedes albopictus

During the 2025 chikungunya outbreak in Foshan, China, researchers combined mosquito surveillance, viral genomics and metagenomics to examine how chikungunya virus transmission affected the virome of Aedes albopictus. Despite widespread virus circulation, mosquito viromes remained largely stable, with only two resident viruses linked to infection. Five previously unknown RNA viruses were also discovered.
