Aerosol Dispersion and Efficacy of Protective Strategies During Dental Procedures

Image
Introduction and Aims Aerosol generation during dental procedures poses significant risks due to the potential for transmitting aerosol-bound microorganisms, including those in dental unit waterlines. This study aimed to quantify aerosol dispersion at various distances from dental procedures using a high-speed electric handpiece, with a focus on the effectiveness of various aerosol mitigation strategies. Methods Employing a mannequin head with an artificial tooth (typodont), we simulated clinical settings without the use of saliva to solely assess the contribution of dental unit waterlines and mechanical factors to aerosol production. Measurements were taken using a spectrometer at distances of 0, 0.9, and 1.8 meters from the handpiece. Results The results showed no significant difference in aerosol dispersion between 0.9 and 1.8 meters without evacuation. In contrast, the use of high-volume evacuators, particularly the Isolite system, significantly decreased aerosol dispersion across ...

Advancing Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment: Integrating Molecular Biomarkers and Emerging Technologies

Image
Cancer biomarkers can be derived from tumor cells or neighboring cells within the tumor microenvironment. Over the past few decades, various molecular markers, including DNA (mutations, copy number variations), RNA (mRNA, microRNA, circular RNA), proteins, and metabolites, have been identified with the aid of rapidly evolving technologies. Some of these markers have demonstrated potential clinical utility, while others have provided new insights into the deregulation of normal molecular and cellular processes that lead to tumorigenesis. Publications in this special issue of the  Biomedical Journal  introduce contemporary approaches aimed at enhancing cancer diagnosis, and monitoring of cancer and treatment options, with the ultimate goal of reducing mortality. These studies highlight the importance of integrating advanced technologies with clinical strategies for treatment of cancer.

Dentistry: Our Sustainable Future

Image
The climate crisis is caused by rising atmospheric levels of greenhouse gases, in particular carbon dioxide, methane and nitric oxide. While major industries and agriculture are the largest contributors to global climate change, ostensibly benign professions such as dentistry also play a role. The articles in this special collection of the   CDA Journal   explore the impact of climate change on dentistry and offer insights into how dental professionals can reduce their carbon footprint while maintaining safe high-quality care.

Eating Camembert improves memory

Image
New study found eating Camembert cheese could improve memory & protect the brain during aging (at least in mice).. Camembert uses Penicillium camemberti in its fermentation, which produces fatty acid amides that are rarely found in other cheeses.
